Who gets what when you’re gone? Don’t leave it to chance

“It’s in my will” isn’t always the certainty it used to be.

Families look different today than they did a generation ago. Second marriages, stepchildren, kids from more than one relationship. And sometimes an estranged relative turns up at exactly the wrong moment.

A will is essential, but on its own it isn’t always enough. Wills can be contested. Estates can sit in probate for months or years while families wait, grieve, and sometimes turn on each other. In blended families, “fair” can mean very different things to different people, and that’s when disputes start.

There’s a more certain way.

Some modern estate planning structures, still unfamiliar to most Australians, let you name exactly who receives what, and have it pass directly to them outside your will. Done well, they can mean:

  • Your choice, honoured. Assets go to the people you name, on your terms.
  • Less waiting. Loved ones may avoid the delays of probate.
  • Less exposure to disputes. Because it sits outside your will, it can be harder to challenge.
  • Peace of mind. One less worry for you and for the people you love.

The right approach depends on your family, your assets and your goals, so it’s worth a proper conversation before you need it.
